As both the herbal supplement industry and the subsequent regulatory compliance requirements have grown, we are seeing an increasing demand for herbalists capable of understanding both the clinical aspects of medicinal plants and quality specifications from the field to the medicine. In addition, herbalists interested in clinical practice are finding niches where they can work in integrative practices.

This webinar will introduce you to the various careers available for herbalists now and into the future. You’ll hear about the exciting work of some of our alumni as well as the industry and consumer trends that are fueling the need for experts. Finally, we’ll show you specifically how the MUIH herbal medicine programs have adapted over time to respond to these trends.

Michael Tims is Director of Herbal Programs at Maryland University of Integrative Health. He has taught at the University of Maryland and Montgomery College, and has had broad experience in the herbal supplement industry as a managing partner of Cash Grocer Natural Foods, as a clinical herbalist, and as an academic researcher focused on the chemical ecology of endangered medicinal plant species. Dr. Tims also collaborated with federal regulators to provide medicinal plant toxicity assessments. He co-developed HerbMed, a web-based herbal database providing access to scientific data on the use and safety of herbal medicine, and he completed an NIH/NIST postdoctoral fellowship developing Botanical Standard Reference Materials. As the founder of Radix Medicina, a science education and writing business, Dr. Tims provided experimental design support for analytical methods development and field experiments for the herbal products industry; developed online biology textbooks; and created a science education blog, Bardo’s Calculus, and a blogging collective for writers and artists at the Hyattstown Millstone. Dr. Tims received his BA in English/Writing from George Mason University and his Ph.D. in the Chemical Ecology of Medicinal Plants from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Bevin Clare, M.S., R.H., CNS, is a clinical herbalist and nutritionist appointed as an Associate Professor and Program Manager of the Post-Master's Certificate in Clinical Herbalism at the Maryland University of Integrative Health. She holds an MSc in Infectious Disease from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and has studied herbal medicine around the world and blends her knowledge of traditional uses of plants with modern science and contemporary healthcare strategies. She is a board member of the United Plant Savers, a group working to protect at-risk medicinal plants in North America. Bevin has been a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild for more than a decade, on the governing council for 10 years and the vice president since 2010.
