Maryland University of Integrative Health’s Research Symposium is an annual event that highlights the University’s research and scholarship.  We recently interviewed James Snow, M.A., RH (AHG), Assistant Provost for Academic Research and Academic Director for Integrative Health Sciences, about the symposium, the keynote speaker’s research, and the importance of evidence-informed practice in integrative medicine. Maryland University of Integrative Health’s Research Symposium is an annual event that highlights the University’s research and scholarship. This free event will offer several highlights, including a presentation by this year’s winner of the MUIH Excellence in Research and Scholarship Award, Michael Tims, Ph.D. His presentation, titled "Design, Development, and Implementation of Two Student-assisted Research Studies" will cover some of the innovative work he has conducted in his role as Academic Director for Herbal Programs at MUIH. Last month, MUIH's Steffany Moonaz, Ph.D., Assistant Director for Academic Research, returned to Capitol Hill to lead a monthly meditation session for members of Congress and their staffers. This ongoing initiative was developed by Rep. Tim Ryan (OH), a champion of mindfulness and meditation practice. We recently interviewed Dr. Moonaz about her experience, and the importance mindful-based practices in today’s political landscape. Read more

Steven Combs, Ph.D., has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer for Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH). “Dr. Combs has devoted the majority of his professional life to the field of higher education, with more than 18 years in leadership positions. He has been a lifelong learner, faculty member, researcher, academic administrator, published author, and scholarly presenter. During Dr. Combs’ exemplary career, his demonstrated successes and chosen priorities have been beautifully aligned with the strategic imperatives for MUIH and will serve us well in the coming years.” said MUIH Board Chair Adele Wilzack. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recently presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Sister Charlotte Kerr “for outstanding service on the Presidentially-appointed Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health, and contributions to the implementation of the National Prevention Strategy.” Sister Charlotte served on the 21-member advisory group from its inception in 2011 through the submission of its final report in September 2016. MUIH is pleased to announce that Leana Wen, M.D., M.Sc., FAAEM, Commissioner of Health for the City of Baltimore, will be our 2017 commencement speaker. Dr. Wen’s personal and professional beliefs align with the way we at MUIH approach well-being. “We share a common goal with MUIH in focusing on maintaining health and ensuring well-being for the vulnerable communities that we serve in the city,” said Wen. “I’m looking forward to working together to advocate for a paradigm shift in our approach to health and to find tangible ways to collaborate.” Read more

It is with tremendous sadness that we share news of the recent death of Robert “Bob” M. Duggan, co-founder and President Emeritus of Tai Sophia Institute, now Maryland University of Integrative Health. Bob was a true pioneer in the field of integrative health and an assertive voice for wellness in America. Though he will be missed, his legacy will thrive through all those he touched. Read more
